the key has lost its code. open the doors manually and use the central locking button inside the car. hold it down and keep pressing your key fob. this should re code the key

SOURCE: 2008 Jeep Compass won't start. Lights are bright

I had same prob with Grand Cherokee - no rhyme nor reason as to when, where or why it wouldn't start. After two new starters the shop finally found a starter wire/cable that was corroded on the inside. Mech' could move it back and forth and it would / would not start. Changed cable six months ago - no problems since. Hope it helps.

SOURCE: I can't start my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee with

Hi Hal,

Did you ever get this resolved? Looks like you didn't get any feedback here! I'm having the same issue sporadically. I turn the key and nothing. Usually if I keep trying it will eventually start cranking and start. Usually within 10 - 15 tries. happened last night. After it started, I got the "Service Security Key" message. I looked in the manual and it does say what that means. Don't know if it is programming (probably not because the fob works 97% of teh time) or maybe just a dying battery. If you can share anything you might have founf out I'd appreciate it! thanks!

Why don't keys lock and unlock doors anymore?

car came with two RKE fobs (the buttons dead or the metal key part dead)

are you saying both fobs fail?
and are the batteries in them fresh,,, they dont last about this long.
and all else on car works, car drives at night perfectly
why must I ask that?>

if both FOBs fail with fresh batteries?
then the car needs to be scanned and fuses in it checked first.

the fob has a battery

I have a Jeep Patriot and some times the drivers doos will not unlock using the key remote and there is no key barrel to open the door wth a key

the car came with 2 key fobs

use the other key
if lost , then this was inevitable.
never run newer car (heck any) with just 1 key.

Possible solution - This happened to me and my battery was dead in my key fob and also I needed an ignition switch because a piece on it was broken which therefore wouldn't turn to start the engine.

Won't start, could it be fob or engine?

Try not using the fob at all open the door with the key. And start the jeep if it works without issue then its the fob. If its still not working correctly remove the battery from the fob and try again(since if it was damaged could be sending the signal for the panic button) the next step is the key try your spare security key can become worn and cause issues with the antitheft system. After that it only leaves computer problems and those can get spendy
