Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom - Recent Questions, Troubleshooting & Support

That's a strange one. The only things I can think of suggesting are:

• Clogged gas cap vent. The next time is starts running poorly, remove the gas cap briefly and see if things improve. If so, then the cap is not venting as it should.
• Moisture trapped in float bowl. Drain the contents on the carburetor float bowl into a clean container and check for dirt, rust, water, or anything else that doesn't belong there.
• Dirty fuel filter. If there is one, replace it.
• Air leak between carb and engine. Check tightness of clamps and manifolds for cracking. WD-40 sprayed around those areas with the engine idling will help detect any leaks.

That's all I can think of. Please let me know if any of my suggestions fixed it.

Hey dude, did you have trying on intake pipe leak ...spray any carb cleaner on the manifold intake....any change would be an air leak.... Voila.Thkx.

Question edited for clarity. Question moved from Cars and Trucks. Lithium Ion batteries are not suitable for motorcycles despite what it says on the label and advertising. The Scotty Kilmer YouTube Channel did a video on it 2 says ago! The technology is different the maker did not design the electronics and the computer for Lithium Ion.

The speedometer is not repairable. You simply replace it. There are places that specialize in "restorations" of speedometers but they mostly work on original equipment speedometers for collector's grade restorations and are VERY expensive. It's cheaper to simply replace the speedo. You may want to record the mileage on the bike and you'll probably have to note on the title that the mileage shown on the new speedo is not correct when you sell the bike.

No such fuse. If speedo is all that is not working, chances are the gearbox sensor has failed.

all you need to do is remove the battery side compartment - pull from the top, and there is a hinge on the bottom. Then unscrew the negative connector -first. Then the positive. Remove the screws for the holder and its done. The new battery will have a moderate charge. You should buy a battery tender and use it to charge it. Also a battery tender will help keep the battery ready to go when you are.

You have a short in the start button. Check it out with a multimeter.

The first thing I would do is replace the spark plugs again. You can foul a plug and it will cause you more problems than you can ever imagine. I see you have done all the logical things that I would recommend but I did not see you have replaced the plugs after the 200 miles. You would be surprised at how many times a $2.00 part can cause fits beyond belief.

Hi, James and the usual suspects are: 1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries. 2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary. 3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections. 4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections. 5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator. 6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark. 7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets 8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system. 9. Improper valve clearance (too tight). 10. Check for generated diagnostic codes.
