screen stays black after boot up

Use Recovery Console:

When a Windows XP boot problem is severe, you'll need to usea more drastic approach. The Windows XP CD is bootable and will provide youwith access to a tool called Recovery Console.

To boot from the Windows XP CD, insert it into the CD-ROMdrive on the problem system and press [Ctrl][Alt][Delete] to reboot thecomputer. Once the system begins booting from the CD, simply follow the promptsthat will allow the loading of the basic files needed to run Setup. When yousee the Welcome To Setup screen, press R to start the Recovery Console.

You'll then see a Recovery Console menu. It displays the foldercontaining the operating system's files and prompts you to choose the operatingsystem you want to log on to. Just press the menu number on the keyboard, andyou'll be prompted to enter the Administrator's password. You'll then findyourself at the main Recovery Console prompt.

Use system utility software like RegInOut after restarting windows.

I had to replace a bad hard drive for a Sony Vaio and first installed Ubuntu, now trying to install Windows 7 instead, but won't work...one error message says hard drive needs to be formatted with NTSF...how can I do that?

  1. Boot from Windows 7 CD.
  2. You'll be asked to select the language. select your preferable language
  3. Then you'll be asked to accept the license agreement.
  4. Then you'll be asked to choose the drive where windows 7 will be installed.
  5. Select any drive and click format in the advanced drive options.
  6. Your drive will be formatted in NTFS and windows 7 will be installed.!

I bought a new hardrive for my m2000 and when i load it it is giving me a "media test failure" response..... how do i load it properly?

If you bought a new hard drive (meaning the internal hard disk), it won't have anything on it. If you just install it and try booting your computer, there won't be an operating system to load. The BIOS (the operating system built into the motherboard) is set up to try loading the operating from connected devices in a certain order. Usually it tries the optical drive first, then the hard drive, and finally it tries to boot over a network connection. The media test failure message means it tried that last resort and still didn't find an operating system, and it's telling you that maybe you have a bad network cable.

You'll need to reinstall your operating system and applications so that the computer will start normally. If your computer came with a restore disc set, or you made a set yourself, you'd use those. If you don't have restore discs, you can do a fresh installation of Windows from CD. You need to find the disc for the version that came installed on your computer, since you'll need to use the product key from the sticker on the bottom. Drivers and utility programs you can download from Compaq's (HP, actually) support and drivers website.

Once you've got a bootable Windows system on the new drive, you won't get that strange message any more.
