Unfortunately the problem is in the replacement motherboard, if you had this done by a professional I suggest you take it back to him for answers.
thanks john
Glad to be of service
in the event i can't get it sorted (as i am travelling right now) do you think a pci card with firewire ports would solve the problem?
It should providing the rest of the motherboard is working properly.
i'll take the computer to a store and make sure before i buy, if the problem is not fixed today
That is a wise choice

SOURCE: Acer Aspire 3680 - No headphone sound
I have had the same problem with my acer aspire 3680. I have been trying different things, and have found one thing that works for me. When I shut the computer down I unplug my speakers first. When I start the computer I wait until the computer starts completely then I plug my speakers in. This has been working for about a week for me with no headphone jack problems at all. Hope this helps someone.
SOURCE: Popping /crackling sound
The only solution is to send it back for repair, to HP. Sound drivers and other software will not fix a soundcard/speaker hardware issue. They stated they need to either re-seat the sound card, or replace the card itself. It is not just the speakers, but the card itself. Try using headphones, you will hear the same problem. Send it back for repair, and INSIST they fix it the first time.
SOURCE: Toshiba Satellite- A135-S4477 unable to connect firewire
There are generally three different types for firewire connectors. In the laptops its usually the mini contact(type 2) so is even on the camcorders. on the desktop PCs and MACs however it could be. either type 1 or the type 2. There is a thired type (B) which is less common.
The link shows all the types, male and female:

what happens when you plug the speakers in the green port? You might want to try the other audio ports because on a few new computers i have seen the speakers have to be plugged in a different hole. also make sure the speakers are plugged up to the electric plug.
SOURCE: Hello all, I have an Acer Aspire One 532h-2268.
You need to have the inverter on the monitor replaced. You need to ask a computer technician to replace the inverter.
Hope this helps
