My Sharp EL-1701C stops working and displays a large P and a small capital E both on the right side of the screen. I tried changing the batteries but that didn't help. Thank you.

Hi cherycooney,
Press the '2nd' button, press the 'M+' button. 'NP' should appear on the display screen, and print function will be turned off. Thanks for using Fixya.
There should be a small slot towards the back. The paper gets fed from the back bottom, and it comes through the top just behind the display.
IF you take your roll of paper, tear off a fresh new edge, make an arrow point at the end (fold 1 side to the middle, and then fold the other side to the middle to meet the other side) to make the paper look like : " > " then insert the pointed side in the slot, and then press PAPER FEED at the same time. The paper should start feeding and you should be good to go.
Helloooo .. There is a switch located above the keyboard labled IC for item count...slide the switch to the on position and as you add a number will appear on the paper tape on the other side of the total. On some units it will appear on the Display also. I hope this solves you problem. Squipps
I Finally figured it out after playing with it for almost 1/2 an hour!
Hit 2nd then Tax + (rate set) it will appear as 0.000 enter your tax rate... mine is 5% so I enter 5.0 then hit 2nd and Tax + (rate set again) And it will work!
It is glorious!!!
