Blu-ray Disc players can play Blu-ray discs, DVDs, CDs, and some can also play other types of discs, such as SACDs and DVD-Audio Discs. However, although you can play a DVD in a Blu-ray Disc player, you can't play a Blu-ray Disc in a DVD player.

The reason that you can't play a Blu-ray Disc on a DVD player is that the discs are embedded with more video and audio information than a DVD player is designed to read. If you want to play the Blu-ray disc, you can buy a Blu-ray player. Or, you can shrink the Blu-ray disc to DVD using Blu-ray copier software. Have you had the Blu-ray player software to play the Blu-ray disc? This is the basic need for playing back Blu-ray disc. If you want to play Blu-ray ISO file, you can directly make use of the free Blu-ray player to play Blu-ray on Mac. VLC and Leawo Blu-ray Player are both good choice.

There are a lot of free Blu-ray player software tools yuo can use to play Blu-ray disc for free. If you are finding the ones for Windows or Mac, you can try Leawo Blu-ray Player which is a free Blu-ray player for Mac and a region free player.

DVD players cannot play Blu-Ray discs. Most Blu-Ray players have DVD support, which means they can play DVDs as well as Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, the DVP3982 is not a DVD player, not a Blu-ray player, therefore it cannot support this format.

Dvd player powers off by itself after playing for about 20 min. wont power on for about ten min. when it cools down

Hi,
This is because your unit is exposed to high temp due to lack of air flow. Keep away all the obstruction from the vent to allow sufficient ventilation. Let your DVD cool down for an hour then try it again.
Hope it may help you.
Have a nice day! Thanks for using Fixya.

My dvd player is asking for a password. I have no idea what the password is. I have a Phillips Mode DVP3982/37.

Try using the code 136900. If this password works, access the general setup menu using your remote, and chose the Disc Unlock option.

I understand this frustration, and truly hope this helps.

Video resolution not supported, but the audio is playing

There should be a way to adjust the resolution on the DVD player, check on the front of the unit for a button that will turn it down to 480i, or anything less than what it is at. You may need to consult the manual, or hook it up to another TV so you can adjust the resolution, then re-attach it to this TV.
