For me on my Cannon MX410 with a "paper Jam" light displayed this WORKED!! The absolute BIZZARE thing was after I went and through the described procedure above and rebooted and tried to print the 1st page that came out had a "crushed" ****-roach on the 1st page! The "inner cover" can be seen if you open the paper output door, which you have to do to open the "printer cover" to get inside the machine and install the ink cartridges. The inner cover is a black bar right inside here. Push it up firmly enough , and it will snap up.

Something that worked for me, I opened the Conon MX310. took out both cartridges, and for 10 seconds I held the Reset. put the cartridges back in, closed the lid, and again, for another 10 seconds held the reset. SLOW seconds. this reset, ink levels recognised,, and it's working as it should be.

Sounds like the printhead is plugged on the black side. A new printhead is #qy6-0052-000 around $40.00. That model also needs a firmware update to help it clean the printhead better.
